Letter of the South Azerbaijan Independence Party to the “Iran” Kurdish Parties
Dear Leaders of the Kurdish Parties,
We respectfully state that the diplomatic relations between the parties of South Azerbaijan and the “Iran” Kurdish parties should be established on the basis of mutual respect for each other’s rights. This is necessary to neutralize the conspiracies of the occupying Iranian regime and to liberate our lands from Iran’s occupation.
The unity of non-Persian nations under the occupation of Iran is the only guarantee for their victory over the occupying Persian forces. Therefore, the Iranian occupying regimes have used various methods to prevent this potential unity. One of these methods has been to carry out large-scale relocations and create conflicts to alter the national composition. The relocation of Iraqi Kurds during the Pahlavi and Islamic Republic of Iran regimes, and their deliberate settlement in the western regions of South Azerbaijan, was intended to be used as a tool against the Turks, and this process continues today. The Kurds living in Western Azerbaijan are citizens of Azerbaijan, just as the Turks living in Kurdistan are considered citizens of Kurdistan.
Unfortunately, the Kurdish parties have fallen prey more than others to the intrigues of the Iranian occupying regime, and by making territorial claims over Alahvaz, Loristan, Kermansha and Azerbaijan’s lands, they have caused conflicts, especially between the Turkish and Kurdish nations. This conflict only benefits the occupying Persian regime.
The protests that took place in Urmia on March 22, 2025, were a natural response to the provocative activities carried out a few days earlier in Urmia by Kurdish parties, especially the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Komala, PJAK, and the PKK, with the support of the Iranian occupying regime.
Despite the harsh pressure faced by Kurdish parties in Kurdistan cities such as Sanandaj and Marivan, and even in Northern Iraq, we are witnessing these parties cooperating with the regime against Azerbaijani Turks in Western Azerbaijan. Why did the Iranian occupying regime not allow the Kurds in Kurdistan cities to celebrate the Nowruz holiday and severely punish the organizers, yet in Western Azerbaijan, especially in Urmia, it not only allowed the Kurds to celebrate, but even provided them with security? As a result, they were able to chant “Urmia is Kurdistan” and raise the Kurdistan flag freely. Kurdish parties were content with this situation, but when the Turks protested these territorial claims, the Kurdish parties distorted the situation and presented the Turks as agents of the Iranian regime.
The protest action on March 22, 2025, was organized by agents of the Iranian occupying regime, including individuals like Khalilpur and Kazipur, under the guise of a religious event and was intended to be directed against Turkey. However, Azerbaijani national activists understood this conspiracy and neutralized it, redirecting the protests in the right direction. During these protests, not only were slogans against the Iranian occupying regime raised, but a firm response was also given to the claim of “Urmia is Kurdistan” with the declaration: “This is Azerbaijan!”
Despite the brutal repression of the Kurds by the Iranian occupying regime in Kurdistan, the cooperation of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Komala, PJAK, and PKK with the Iranian regime in Western Azerbaijan is an undeniable fact. The territorial claims of these parties over Azerbaijan are increasingly escalating the situation in Western Azerbaijan. The responsibility for the consequences of this lies entirely with the Iranian occupying regime and the Kurdish parties.
The massacre of Azerbaijanis in Urmia by Ismail Simitko, as well as the attack on Sulduz (Naghadeh) by the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Abdürrəhman Qasımlo, and the killing of unarmed Azerbaijani Turks, are not forgotten by Azerbaijan. For these events, Azerbaijani Turks harbor a deep sense of hatred towards the Kurdish parties.
It is the duty of the Kurdish parties to openly condemn these historical crimes and thus build trust. However, to this day, no Kurdish party has done so.
The South Azerbaijan Independence Party, understanding that the policy of the Iranian occupiers to alter the national composition is the main cause of the existing problems between non-Persian nations, offers a transparent and cooperative approach to prevent conflicts between the Turkish and Kurdish nations. First and foremost, we must work together to expel the occupying regime from our lands. Afterward, based on historical maps and through peaceful negotiations, we must define our borders.
As a basis for an agreement, the geographical map of the current provinces of Western Azerbaijan and Kurdistan can be accepted. Based on this agreement, no Kurdish party can make territorial claims over the province of Western Azerbaijan, just as no Azerbaijani party can make claims over the province of Kurdistan.
